Genomics Perspective - What is on offer for Nguni Breeders and their Clients

By Japie van der Westhuizen, Bobbie van der Westhuizen, Helena Theron

How can genomic information improve breeding decisions beyond conventional BLUP breeding values? This article explains how genomics can improve the prediction of genetic merit, particularly for traits that are difficult or expensive to measure, such as female fertility, maternal ability and longevity. The authors explore why accurately defining breeding objectives and recording economically important traits remain essential, and how genomic testing can improve estimates of relationships between animals, reduce uncertainty in selection decisions and accelerate genetic progress. Their central message is that genomics strengthens existing genetic evaluation systems; it does not replace sound breeding objectives or informed selection.
