Carcass Competitions
The Royal Show carcass competition and auction - indisputably the premier red meat event in KwaZulu-Natal – took place in the Food Hall on Wednesday evening and saw record prices in the lamb categories being achieved.
The 2007 lamb champion was auctioned for an astonishing R3000 per kg, translating into R64 500 for the 21,5 kg. carcass. This is a world record achieved at a standard commercial red meat auction and verification is currently being sought by the Guinness Book of Records.
For comparative purposes, the current average ruling price for lamb is R28 per kg.
The animal - an Ile de France - was bred by Mark Gietzmann and Jimmy Keyser of the DeBonnaire Stud, Fochville in the North West Province and achieved a 98,15% rating.
