VAN ROOY SHEEP

When the breeding of the Van Rooy sheep was started in 1995 the requirements set were threefold.  The breed had to be strong and hardy to cope with regular droughts.  It had to be fertile in order to maintain a high reproduction.  It had to have an excellent conformation.  The ewe produces regularly - at least three lambs in two years. The  breed is very hardly and adaptable and additional feeding is hardly ever necessary.

In a recent survey by a study group, it was revealed that the Van Rooy sheep rendered the highest return per morgen.

The Van Rooy is to a great extent inured to internal parasites and diseases or to the consequences there of.

Although the carcass is grade as a fat-tailed type, and the price per kilogram is slightly lower, the price of the skin makes up for the loss.

During 1998 the first Wonderpan Van Rooy embryos were successfully exported to Australia.  We believe that the Van Rooy sheep is the answer for the sheep farmer in this endeavor to change from wool to meat production.
